Puffers are intelligent, characterful fish known for their beak-like teeth, curious behaviour, and species-specific care needs. The aquarium trade includes both freshwater and brackish species, ranging from small dwarf puffers to much larger solitary predators.
Many puffers are territorial, fin-nippy, or predatory, and should not be treated as standard community fish. Social behaviour varies strongly by species, with some best kept singly and others manageable in carefully planned groups.
Research the exact species carefully before purchase, paying close attention to adult size, temperament, salinity requirements, and diet. Many puffers need meaty foods such as snails or crustaceans to help wear their teeth, along with a well-maintained tank and carefully chosen tankmates.
