Mikrogeophagus altispinosus
The Bolivian ram is a larger, often hardier Mikrogeophagus from the upper Amazon and Madeira basins. It tolerates a slightly wider temperature band than the German blue ram and is frequently recommended for keepers who want ram behaviour without quite as punishing warmth. Colour is more bronze-yellow with red highlights than electric blue. Pairs are territorial when breeding; they sift substrate for small invertebrates and appreciate planted aquaria with sand, wood, and calm companions.
Sinking micro pellets; frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworm; occasional live or gel foods; sand-sifting behaviour—feed foods that reach the bottom.
Frequency: 1–2× daily
Varied diet improves fin and body colour; avoid single-food diets.
Native Region: Bolivia, Brazil (upper Amazon / Madeira tributaries)
Slow rivers and flood zones with vegetation and soft substrate.
Spacious footprint, fine sand, wood, and plants; moderate lighting; stable filtration without strong current.
Activity Level: Moderate
Generally calmer than many small cichlids; still defend a territory when breeding.
Difficulty: Moderate
Type: Egg layer
Sexual Dimorphism: Males often longer fins and brighter colour; females rounder-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.
Open or rock spawning like other rams; pair may guard a cleaned surface; softer water can trigger spawning.
Substrate: Sand
Plant Safe: Yes
Caves or flat stones for territory; tall plants for cover.
