Catfish are a broad and diverse group of freshwater fish recognised by their barbels and bottom-oriented feeding habits. In the hobby, this catch-all category includes peaceful community fish as well as larger nocturnal or predatory species.
Behavior varies widely by species. Many catfish are secretive bottom-dwellers that become most active around feeding time or after dark, while others are open-water fish or social shoalers.
Research each species carefully before stocking, paying close attention to adult size, mouth size, diet, and compatibility. Many catfish appreciate cover, subdued lighting, and sinking foods, but their social needs and aggression levels vary too much for one general rule.
